MOBBING AND BOSSING IN THE MILITARY UNIT: CAUSES AND WAYS TO OVERCOME

Abstract

This article examines the issues of mobbing and bossing in military units, analyzing their impact on the moral and psychological state of service members and the overall effectiveness of military service. It explores the legal regulation of these phenomena in Ukraine, highlighting the specific characteristics of mobbing in the military environment, its causes, and consequences. The study underscores that psychological pressure, harassment, and humiliation within military collectives not only deteriorate the emotional well-being of personnel but also undermine discipline, cohesion, and operational readiness. The article reviews existing Ukrainian legislation related to the prevention of workplace harassment and assesses its applicability to the military sphere. The research identifies key challenges in addressing mobbing and bossing in military units, including the lack of specific legal definitions, insufficient reporting mechanisms, and the reluctance of affected personnel to seek assistance due to fear of retaliation. Additionally, attention is given to the role of commanders and military leadership in fostering a healthy working environment and preventing the spread of psychological abuse among subordinates. The study also discusses possible ways to improve legal mechanisms for combating mobbing in military formations. Recommendations include the establishment of internal investigative commissions to review complaints, the enhancement of oversight mechanisms to ensure compliance with military ethics and human rights standards, and the introduction of regular psychological evaluations and training for officers and enlisted personnel. Furthermore, the article emphasizes the importance of preventive measures such as educational programs on workplace harassment, anonymous reporting channels, and legal awareness campaigns for service members. In conclusion, the article stresses the necessity of strengthening the legal framework and institutional mechanisms aimed at protecting military personnel from mobbing and bossing. Addressing this issue is crucial for maintaining morale, discipline, and the overall efficiency of military operations. Ensuring a respectful and harassment-free environment within military structures is not only a legal and ethical obligation but also a prerequisite for the successful functioning of the armed forces.
